Redefining a global HR portal

We worked with L'Oreal to develop a strategy and redesign for their HR portal, L'Oreal & Me, used by 70,000 employees across 60 countries in 23 different languages.

The challenge

L'Oreal's 70,000 staff globally had a huge range of different HR requirements, with L'Oreal & Me providing a wealth of content to try and fulfill on these requirements. Unfortunately the content was difficult to navigate and understand so usage was very low.

The key objectives of the project were to:

  • Raise the profile of L'Oreal's HR department
  • Design a platform that could be rolled out to all 60 locales
  • Discover what users wanted from their HR intranet
  • Explore where L'Oreal & Me fits into the larger digital ecosystem, amongst 20 other intranet sites

Our approach

L'Oreal engaged us to redesign their HR portal; however, the nature of the project quickly shifted towards strategy: Do users actually need a global HR portal, and if so what should its core proposition be?

  1. We ran a series of user interviews which quickly ascertained the value of a global HR portal, but also that employees just didn't realise to what extent L'Oreal & Me could potentially help them.
  2. After running a series of stakeholder workshops, we sketched 4 different design directions for the new L'Oreal & Me portal.
  3. We based ourselves on-site to allow for close collaboration and constant feedback from the client.
  4. Through continued stakeholder engagement and user research (with staff based across the globe), we refined, enriched and prototyped the best possible design strategy and solution, ultimately designing a usable, aspirational L'Oreal & Me portal.

Impact & results

The portal has now launched across 60 countries in 23 languages to 70,000 employees.

Feedback from users was incredibly positive from the start – the most common comments being that the portal is easy-to-use, has a clean layout, and, most importantly, that people can now find things!

By working very closely and often on-site in Paris with L'Oreal, we ensured that key internal stakeholders came on the design journey with us, fully buying-in to our work. Our highly collaborative approach allowed us to quickly craft an easy-to-use interface and intuitive user journeys for their HR portal.
