1 in 8 million

by Philip Webb on 1 April 2011

The New York Times 1 in 8 million microsite is something rare – a brilliant match between great content and great interaction design. One of the reasons the site works, why it is such a compelling digital experience, is that the interface design complements the nature of the content itself.

1 in 8 million is a way to showcase the lives of ordinary New Yorkers and since the lives are unknown the only way to reach the content is to browse it. The site excels at delivering this browsing experience in several ways:

Even the content itself affords the browsing experience – the montage of professional quality black-and-white photos complements each story without overwhelming it in the way video would. The key content is audio – the voice of New Yorkers telling their own story.
