Embedding user centred design

Pearson Education wanted to embed user-centred design into their digital product development process, ensuring their products and services satisfied the needs of their customers around the world.

The challenge

Pearson Education wanted to support the migration of their products from very old fashioned physical media (CD-ROM and print) to digital media with user-centred methodologies, to maintain and enhance the quality of their customers' experience.

Having a user-centred design process embedded into all product development would help achieve this goal. They wanted key stakeholders to have a full understanding of, and buy-in to, user-centred design (UCD).

The main objectives were:

  • Provide senior stakeholders in Pearson with an overview of the purpose of UCD and how to implement UCD processes
  • Create and deliver interactive training that could be understood by teams that weren't familiar with design or user experience
  • Transfer knowledge to allow internal teams to apply UCD processes to a range of products and services

Our approach

We started by meeting with senior stakeholders to discuss areas of particular value to their organisation, and to ensure their close participation in the planning process. We then drew up a highly customised program of training and consultancy, working intimately with Pearson throughout.

We delivered a series of training sessions and workshops to a number of stakeholders in London and New York to communicate the UCD message and ensure everyone understood and bought-in to user-centred design.

Impact & results

Our specialised program delivered a detailed and comprehensive introduction to user-centred design. We interacted with a diverse audience ranging from business analysts to digital professionals.

Our training was extremely well received and gave Pearson the knowledge they needed to incorporate key UCD processes into the development of their digital services.
