A foundation in design - in a day

Design is all around us - it's everywhere - and everyone can benefit from gaining an understanding of the fundamental principles that underpin it. This intensive and comprehensive day of training combines the disciplines of visual and user interface design.

This is a hands-on course, delivered by our visual interface designers who spend their days running design projects for our clients. You'll gain an understanding of the key visual design principles and best practices, enabling you to design digital interfaces. 

During the training course you'll learn:

  • An overview of visual design
    We'll outline why design matters and show you how design can elicit different first impressions
  • The role of colour
    We'll take an in-depth look at the use of colour in design and the role it occupies within brand strategy
  • How to use typography
    We'll explain about fonts, legibility hierarchy and contrast, with plenty of real-world examples and comparisons
  • How to work with imagery
    We'll look at case studies to compare and contrast the different use of images, and you'll create a mood board
  • About layout
    Structure, balance & composition are the building blocks of design, and you'll learn about different design dimensions including density vs. spaciousness
  • About icons & input controls
    See good and bad examples of various graphical elements and learn about affordance and mapping principles
  • Designing for mobile devices
    We'll explain about the challenges and best practice principles of designing for tablets and smartphones
  • About design processes
    From design research to sketching, mood boards, style tiles and elements collages, through to wireframes, mockups and templates

Meet Scott Abbott, one of your trainers

As a senior designer at Webcredible, Scott creates the visual aspects of our digital outputs for many of our high-profile clients. Originally with a BA in graphic design and illustration from De Montfort University, he has a solid design foundation with a particular focus on digital.

Scott brings a strong visual design perspective to all Webcredible projects and outputs. Design has a practical purpose and is a key component of the user experience, and he leads on driving this through all of our client deliverables.

He's a really enthusiastic trainer, gets great feedback from his participants and is always keen to communicate new ways to think about design.

Courses start at 10am and finish at 4.30-5pm.
